新华社北京1月12日专电（记者李惠子、田素雷）公安部12日发布的资料显示，我国2005年共发生道路交通事故450254起，造成98738人死亡，比上年分别下降13.1％和7.8％。
公安部官员在12日上午举行的新闻发布会上说，这是自2001年以来全国交通事故死亡人数首次回落到10万人以下。
根据公安部发布的资料，去年的道路交通事故还造成469911人受伤，同比下降2.3％；直接财产损失18.8亿元，同比下降21.2％。万车死亡率为7.6，比2004年减少2.3。
机动车驾驶人交通违法是造成交通事故的主要原因。2005年，全国机动车驾驶人交通肇事417355起，造成91062人死亡，分别占总数的92.7％和92.2％。
2005年，全国共发生一次死亡10人以上特大道路交通事故47起，造成807人死亡、705人受伤。与2004年相比，事故起数下降14.5％；死亡人数下降5.3％；受伤人数下降19.6％。
